Just a thought here. Isn't it entirely possible that Angie Craig winds up in the Senate anyway? If Klobuchar wins the governor's race, won't she be appointing her replacement? Is there a more obvious pick than Craig?

Sen. Klobuchar does not have to resign her Senate seat until she is sworn in as governor. However, it seems unlikely that Gov. Walz would pre-empt Klobuchar and make his own selection even if that opportunity arose. So, yes, Klobuchar likely will appoint her successor. The appointment, though, is only until the next general election which, in state statutes is defined as the first Tuesday in November in odd-numbered years. The person elected in the special election would serve until Klobuchar’s original term expires, January 2031. There will be no shortage of Democratic applicants for the appointment. I would be surprised, though, if Craig is the person selected.

Thanks for an excellent and succinct -- and hopeful--summary of the election result, Tom. It's going to be an interesting electlon season, in a good way, I hope.

Spot on analysis. I do wish MN could find a way to have other parties. The current two-party system is getting creaky and forcing odd alliances. New York has a system that allows a candidate to run on multiple party lines. For example, a candidate can appear on the ballot both under the Working Families Party and the Democratic Party.
