Another thoughtful piece, thank you for continuing to be a voice of reason, Tom.

It is just mind boggling that nearly all Republican office holders -- at every level of government -- are cowed into submission and silence by the Trump Machine. At the same time, it is mind boggling that many (most?) Democratic office holders fail to acknowledge the depth and breadth of the anti-Constitutional nature of Trump and his allies (and effectively, the Republicans in Congress too), thereby necessitating a much more vigorous and vocal oppositional effort than what has been put forth so far. In the final analysis, are US office holders (on the whole) just a bunch of pansies and wimps? So much for our self-delusion of our American Exceptionalism.

Below are Senator Tommy Tuberville's comment before the legislation was brought to the floor. Don't you find it hard to believe that 100% of Republicans in the Senate & House supported the legislation and 100% of the Democrats (except one House Democrat) voted against it.

The reason I support President Trump is because I feel he is working directly for me. I want DOGE to weed out waste/fraud & abuse, I want the boarder closed, I want gangbangers like TDA & MS13 deported immediately, I want the military ready at a moments notice to deploy & defend our National Interest. That means kill people. Military action is hard & demanding.

Democrat Joe Biden was asleep at the wheel for years. You know it & I know it. My hope is Pam Bondi & Kash Patel leaves no stone unturned when they investigate the Biden administration & family. All the best, Rick

.

“Over the past four years, women’s sports and women’s protections, at all levels, have been under attack. Since the beginning of time, people have agreed that sex is assigned at birth and determined by God. But under [the] Biden administration, you had people claiming that men can get pregnant. Pure, absolute insanity. But it didn’t stop there. They weren’t content just to erase gender norms that have been accepted for thousands of years. No, they wanted to allow transgender men to participate in women’s and girls’ sports. This has been happening at schools all across our country. […] Young women have been forced to compete against men and even to share locker rooms and shower time. And on top of that, your taxpayer dollars are paying for it. Thankfully, President Trump signed an Executive Order—he said, ‘no more, no more federal money to any state that allows this to happen.’ But you have to understand, this only lasts as long as President Trump is in office. We need this vote, which is going to happen in around an hour, to pass so we can make this into law. This Executive Order that he signed can be reversed".

It is contradictory to praise Sen. Tuberville and call for military readiness in the same post. Tuberville did more to undermine the military chain of command and its readiness than anyone else in the last two years. His unconscionable hold on officer promotions significantly degraded military preparedness. He did it for reasons completely unrelated to national security. Appalling.

As to the legislation you cite, it’s a bad bill. You may agree with it because you either don’t understand or don’t accept sexual dysphoria and gender identity. That’s up to you, although Merck Manuals has a common language description on gender incongruence you may find useful.

Yes, girls and women should be able to compete fairly. Yes, the safety of girls and women, whether in bathrooms or anyplace else, should be protected. But Trump isn’t offering solutions to the core issues. He is playing on the prejudices and biases of some. He is doing to transgender people what some did a generation ago to gays.

God and nature work in mysterious ways. People are born with different physical and psychological issues; that doesn’t give you the right to abuse those who are different. Thanks to you and Trump we now have a majority of states in which politicians have imposed themselves between parents following evidence-based health protocols and qualified doctors in deciding health care for their children. I can’t think of a single other medical issue in which the judgment of parents - again, those following prescribed protocols from qualified doctors - is denied not for health reasons but for political, religious and ideological reasons. What kind of conservatism supports suppressing parental authority with political perfidy?

Tommy Boy, did you write about this? I can't recall. Both sides appear to be cowed!

No Senate Democrat on Monday voted in favor of the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, which would keep biological males from competing in women’s and girls’ sports.

A procedural vote took place on the Senate floor and Republicans needed at least 60 votes to break the filibuster. They received 51. Sens. Angus King, I-Maine, and Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., voted with Democrats.

A bad piece of legislation doesn’t solve a legitimate problem. So you’re OK with invasive body scans and probes of very young girls? Seems an overreach of government in the extreme, doesn’t it? Find better solutions than that. And meanwhile, Republicans use this issue to turn their backs on other very serious problems, including the on-going disclosures of sensitive intelligence information, the undermining of Social Security and the VA, usurping the rule of law and due process for legal residents of the country and many other issues. Of course, find a solution to assure that women and girls can compete fairly. But find a real solution, not a political one. And in the meantime, stop ignoring other issues of immediate impact.

Tom, was there ever a piece of legislation that solved 100% of the problem it was intended to solve? Probably NO! But if a young girl/young adult female is in the locker-room or bathroom, reserved specifically for girls/women, and the person next to her has a dick, then she should be able to have that person removed from the woman's locker-room/bathroom without being labeled as "Transphobic". Or eliminated from competition awards rightly won.

Wouldn't you agree?

Maybe you should attempt to write a piece of legislation that you think will work, unless your in agreement that boys/men should be able to access, at will, the spaces specifically reserved for women. All the best, Rick

Every person should feel safe. The legislation wouldn't have achieved that goal. You're right -- no legislation is perfect, but those laws that are harmful should be avoided.
