In a way, Tom, your analysis here is shocking - because it’s just so reasonable. We’re not used to reasonable discourse anymore. Half the country supports a guy who pines for Hitler’s generals.
Excellent distillation of the situation we all face. We all must do our part to be neighbors to all our fellow citizens. To be effective on a national scale, some of that doing must come through the federal government. The government is not the enemy. In large measure, the government is us. We must seek to make it and us better.
This is what decency looks like.
